Rope Jump
Part 1:
In the first part of this activity, students were instructed to create a link with their hands, and without letting go, cross over the rope. If any student let go of another’s hand, the entire class restarted.

In the first part of this activity, students were instructed to create a link with their hands, and without letting go, cross over the rope. If any student let go of another’s hand, the entire class restarted.
Observations:
Students initial reaction to this activity was to take an individualized approach. Most students chose to lift their own legs over the rope, and rely very little on their peers for physical stability or support. Unfortunately, some students struggled with this approach, and broke the hand holding chain, which resulted in the entire class restarting the challenge. Although no students asked a classmate for help during the first part of this activity, many students gradually began offering support by pulling on another student's hand as way of stabilization. After a hand full of attempts, students were successful in each student crossing the rope.

In the second part of this activity, students were again instructed to create a link with their hands, and without letting go, cross over the rope. However, this time, the rope was substantially higher.
In the second part of this activity, students were again instructed to create a link with their hands, and without letting go, cross over the rope. However, this time, the rope was substantially higher.
Observations:
During the second part of this activity, students again attempted to complete the challenge by individually lifting their legs over the rope. However, as the rope had been moved substantially higher, many students struggled with this or were wholly unable to do this. Once the students realized that many of their classmates were not able to cross over the rope on their own, they began offering physical support to one another. Many students braced others with their back, supported others arms, or offered their knees as steps. With the physical support of their classmates, all students were able to successfully cross the rope. Moreover, for the first time, students began verbally encouraging and cheering each other on during this activity. This encouragement created a sense of 'togetherness' for the students, and when the last student successfully crossed the rope, the entire class erupted into cheers of celebration. Listen to the student's celebration of success:
